Le Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle à Paris a annoncé début août une découverte exceptionnelle : le plus ancien insecte fossile du monde. Une découverte intervenue en Belgique, dans un gisement de Strud (province de Namur) datant du Dévonien supérieur. Cette découverte vient confirmer que les premiers insectes seraient apparus il y a plus de 365 millions d'années. Les résultats ont été publiés dans la revue Nature.

From now on, it will be possible to warn of the danger of upcoming locust swarms, basedon the colour of the insects, thanks to a recent CIRAD study of red locusts in Madagascar. The study team succeeded in quantifying the link between locust density and the colour of the different parts of the insects' bodies. These results mean that colour variations can now be used as an early indicator of gregarization.

Following the 2012 International Biodiversity Day, the International Institute for Species Exploration (Arizona State University,USA) has revealed the top 10 new species discovered in 2011. Last year, a Madagascar spider and a cricket from Reunion were on the list.
